Conventions allow both small and large businesses to compete on an even playing field, no matter how big their trade show budget is. There are several things that exhibitors do that can make an impact on their success at expos, but there are also many things that successful exhibitors avoid that are equally as important.
Stay away from these faux pas in order to get the most out of your exhibit.
1. No Communication
Managers and the booth staff should have an open line of communication so that everyone knows what is expected of them. Hold a meeting before every show in order to go over what the team and individual goals are, where to put the lead information generated at your display exhibition, and any other information everyone should know in order to keep your booth running smoothly.
2. Participating in Too Many Trade Shows
It s true that trade shows will get companies the exposure they need, but if you are exhibiting at too many conventions, you ll be rushing from one to the next without properly preparing for each one. Instead, choose a one or two shows that are targeted for your audience and properly prepare for it by training your staff, designing your custom display, developing goals, and more.
3. Not Researching Vendors
Having great vendors to work with are so important because it is these companies that are responsible for designing our trade show exhibits on time, as well as shipping it to the right location on the day and time agreed upon. Before hiring a vendor, interview them by asking enough questions to get an idea of whether or not you trust them. Also, do a little internet research to find reviews on these companies that could help you make your decision.
4. Picking the Wrong Booth Staffers
Your staff will be the face of your company at the trade show, so having a team that is enthusiastic, knowledgeable on your products or services, outgoing, and timely are important characteristics of these people. Having a staffer who is lazy, won t make eye contact with attendees, knows very little about the products, and clearly doesn t want to be there will reflect poorly on your business and would hurt your chances of generating all of the leads wanted to get the best return on investment.
5. No Promotions
Give attendees a reason to stop by your booth by offering some sort of incentive, such as a discount, a contest, a hands-on demonstration, etc. Whatever activity you decide to use, make sure to promote it before and during the event through social media, blogs, press releases, and pictures.
6. Not Following up
And finally, the biggest mistake that can be made at the trade show is not following up with qualified leads. Most attendees will not contact you after the show, so it s important to call, email, or send a handwritten note to these possible customers. This will help them remember you and your business when they are ready to make the purchase.
