A Strong 4-Piece Marketing Strategy

4-piece marketing-strategyIt is easy to spot a good marketing strategy when you know what to look for in the plan. Within the overall Sales and Marketing Plan, the main goal is to grow the business, of course. There are many avenues or channels that can be pursued in the marketing plan, but in general, a worthy plan must involve ways to cover these 4 main strategy categories:

  1. A Strong Strategy for Gaining New Clients/Customers:
    • This is the larger portion of your marketing budget (perhaps up to 40%)
    • There are literally millions of ways to build campaigns and gain new clients/customers; this should be studied carefully and matched to your specific goals
    • Determine long-term (lifetime) value of one client or customer and then based upon that average, decide how much you are willing to spend to gain one client/customer (this is your ROI consideration)
    • Think in terms of campaigns. Diversification of campaigns and venue/channel types is the best low-risk approach
    • Target your marketing as closely as possible to your selected demographic
    • Balance larger audience exposure methods (like trade shows or cable advertising) against more individualized marketing channels (such as single ads, special offers)
  2. A Referral Strategy:
    • The next largest chunk of your marketing budget (perhaps up to 30%)
    • Have a plan to get referrals from satisfied customers/clients and ask for the referral
    • Start the sales process with an introduction that includes the name of the referrer
    • Get referrals from all new (referrals) clients/customers
  3. Strategy to Recover Lost Clients/Customers:
    • This might be up to 20% of your total marketing budget
    • Research has proven that well over half of lost clients/customers are recoverable
    • The biggest reason for lost customers/clients is that they feel you do not care about them or have lost contact over time
    • Call or write lost clients to reestablish a relationship cheaper than getting new clients/customers
    • Cultivate ways to stay in touch once they have been recovered (like mail, email, phone, etc.)
  4. Strategy to Sell to Existing Clients/Customers:
    • This might be up to 10% of your marketing budget
    • Making additional sales from existing satisfied clients/customers is your best ROI
    • Strategy is to get existing client base to buy more frequently and in larger quantities
    • Eliminate your worst clients/customers and focus on your best. Don t be afraid to cut your overall list significantly in order to focus energy on the most rewarding relationships

This 4-part marketing plan strategy is only a guideline for getting the most from your marketing budget and efforts. An effective marketing plan is always tailored to fit the target market demographic and best practices within existing customer base. The bottom line: marketing is an investment made against an expected return on that investment.
