The Biggest Mistake Made by Trade Show Exhibitors

Trade shows can be extremely intimidating, especially if you are new to exhibiting. There are hundreds of flashy, enormous trade show displays that you are competing with. It is easy to see why some small businesses may doubt their ability to do well at these events when there are multi-billion dollar corporations to go up against. Don t underestimate the power of trade show graphics.

One of the biggest mistakes made by exhibitors is the fact that they think the busier their show display graphics are, the more attention they will receive from attendees. The reality is that if you have too much going on, your trade show display will get overlooked. When designing your graphics, think of billboards you see on the side of the road? We only have a matter of seconds to view these signs, so are we going to understand the message being communicated by a billboard that has multiple images and text or the one that is simple and straight to the point?

It doesn't matter how big your trade show booth is, your efforts are going to be wasted if there s too much noise coming from the display system. A few key points to keep in mind when designing your trade show graphics are:

  • Keep the text short and to-the-point. Your marketing message should be communicated in 1 or 2 sentences.
  • Use no more than 2 or 3 images
  • Bright colors are much more attention-grabbing than neutral colors. Some colors to consider are red, orange, and yellow.
  • Fancy, colorful text may look attractive on paper, but may be difficult to read on a trade show booth. Use clear, sharp text that is large enough to see from down the trade show aisle. Arial font is probably the easiest and most popular font used.

A table top display can have just as much of an impact as a 20 foot booth if the graphics are done correctly. So for all of you small business owners, don t give up hope. You don t have to spend a fortune to be a success at conventions; you just need to know how to communicate your marketing message in a simple, straight-to-the-point way.

By following some of the simple tips I pointed out previously, you ll be able to get your message across much more effectively than with over-the-top, busy convention display systems.
