File Preparation Guidelines

File preparation for display graphics.
In order to ensure smooth and timely production of your project, here are some guidelines for preparing files for our graphics production department. We recommend these guidelines be followed whenever possible. Deviation can lead to increased cost and/or decreased quality. If there are ever any questions, please do not hesitate to call.

Resolution

  • Raster images should have 150 dpi resolution for any graphics below 50".

  • For graphics larger than 50" you may reduce resolution to 100 dpi to conserve file size.

  • Exceeding 200 ppi at final size is counterproductive, because it creates excessive file sizes. These
excessive image sizes do not translate well during the ripping process and image quality is lost.

  • Please do not convert a low-resolution image to a higher resolution; quality will decrease, often dramatically.

Photoshop or CS

This is the preferred application for supplying high resolution raster images.  All files submitted as a Photoshop file should be at a 100% (full scale), in CMYK mode, 100-150dpi (dots per inch).  Work in proportion if graphic size is larger than art board size. For example if graphic is 30 x 90 , work half size at 15 x 45 . Rasterize font layers then save as a flattened tiff file with LZW compression (this window appears as you save your document). Please include the file extension in the name.

ILLUSTRATOR 10 OR CS

This is the preferred application for supplying layouts and vector art with maximum compatibility and flexibility. Please supply all Illustrator files in CMYK mode, all text MUST be converted into outlines. The file should be to scale, half scale is also acceptable. All raster images must be linked tiff files (NOT EMBEDDED) and created to Photoshop specifications. Provide all logos and text within the application wherever possible. Please include the file extension in the name

How to get colors to match
Critical colors and vector elements should be specified using the Pantone palettes available within the layout or drawing application. Utilizing PMS values will help us to match colors more accurately.  Printing in large format does not ensure 100% color accuracy. Colors and photos will print an approximate 95% accurate. We print CMYK or RGB. Art Submissions with specific Pantone Color call out's will automatically be converted to CMYK. If you require any specific color to be matched, please include a match print, or previously printed media such as a brochure, business card or any printed sample with your desired color. We will make an effort to match your specified color. Since we print in CMYK and not in spot PMS colors, the final color printed may not exactly match the sample(s) provided. For your convenience we do offer test strips prior to final printing for you to review (at an additional cost) This will add 2 (or more) days to your schedule. Any adjustments to color will be subject to additional cost, including any additional proofs that need to be sent out.

Bleed allowances
Please provide printable bleed to the document size of your layout. (Bleed that extends off the document edge is irrelevant because all the information on the pasteboard is lost when the file is printed.) If the longest dimension is under 50” then provide 1/4” of bleed around the entire file. If the longest dimension is over 50” then provide 1/2” bleed on all sides of the document.

How to create Mural Panels

  • Multiple panel murals should be done on one complete page.

  • Do not tile panels onto multiple pages.

  • Bleed needs to be included in all panel jobs to ensure continuity in matching the panels.

Software programs that we support:

We prefer the final output received to be a flattened TIFF with LZW Compression.  This format eliminates any movements of layers or elements within PhotoShop or Illustrator as well dependency upon font files.  It also reduces the file size of your graphics as they can easily exceed 1 GB.  If we are matching a PMS or Pantone Value please provide a layered file as adjustments may need to be made for this individual layer.

  • Image file formats such as TIFF, JPEG

  • Adobe Photoshop

  • Adobe Illustrator

Transfer
Please use ZIp or Stuffit utilities for compression. Be sure CD-ROMs are ISO 9660.

On the Disk

  • Organize all relevant files into one folder.

  • Include all screen and printer fonts. Be sure to include those embedded in EPS files as well as those in main layout.

  • Include original files of any imported or embedded EPS or TIFF image files included in layout.

  • If there are other files that need to remain on the disk, but are not relevant, please put them into a “Do Not Use” folder.

Also Include with Your Order

  • A hard copy of the layout (PDF Files are acceptable alternatives.)

  • Any physical references for critical colors (product samples, fabric swatch, previous proof, etc.)

  • For discs, include print out of file names and directory structure.
